- Save water and energy
- Simplify recommissioning and use fewer chemicals
Passive wintering
We live in a region prone to severe frost and most of the time, your filtration system is not frost-free. In this case, you won’t even have a choice. You’ll need to passively winterize your pond.
This procedure is time-consuming and must be carried out properly : it involves completely shutting down your pool.
Here are the steps to follow :
- Wait for water temperature to drop below 15°C
- Clean your pool by leaving it in water : walls, water line, skimmer baskets, pre-filter. Dismantle and store pool accessories.
- Descale your filter thoroughly, and at least 12 hours later, backwash and rinse the filter. Change the filter media to a sand filter if necessary (every 5 years for sand, every 10 years for glass). Remove and clean cartridges for a cartridge filter. Remove the used diatomite charge from the diatomite filters and clean the supports.
- Adjust pH between 7.0 and 7.4
- Shock-treat with your usual product and filter continuously for 24 hours.
- Emptying and draining : Lower the water level in the basin below the lowest seal. Dismantle the backflow, broom socket and remove the skimmer basket. Put everything away and drain the pipes, excluding the bottom drain of course. Close the various openings with the appropriate devices : plugs and gizzmos. Drain, clean and store the pump in a dry, frost-free place if your equipment room is not frost-free. Set the sand filter’s 6-way valve between 2 positions (to avoid damaging the star seal).
- Empty all external pipes and drains, then close all filter valves.
- Arrange the floats on the diagonal of the pool. These will absorb ice pressure in the event of frost.
- Use a watering can to pour diluted winterizing product to prevent limescale deposits and algae growth.
- Install a winter cover or your 4-season safety cover to protect your pond from UV rays and plant debris. Your pond is ready for winter.
- Switch off the power supply to your equipment room.
Take advantage of this period to take stock of your filtration system’s ” health” and replace any faulty parts.

- Add winterizing agent to prevent limescale deposits and algae growth
- Add disinfectant in the form of blocks, pebbles or tablets to the skimmer.
Leave the filter running for at least 4 hours a day, at times when the risk of frost is greatest. In the event of frost, leave the filtration system running 24 hours a day to prevent ice forming in the pool’s hydraulic system.
